1. Traditional stages in developing a system

Students Learn About:
  • understanding the problem
  • planning
  • designing
  • implementing
  • testing, evaluating and maintaining

Students Learn To:
  • recognise and apply appropriate stages in their project work
  • read and interpret the requirements for a new system in terms of:
    • the needs of the users of the information system
    • who the participants are
    • the data/information to be used
    • required information technology
    • information processes
  • use a variety of design tools to help plan the structure of an information system
  • use an information system to generate Information

Stages of Developing Information Systems

System Development Cycle or System Life Cycle
  • understanding the problem—identifying the requirements of a system that would solve the problem
  • making decisions—determining the feasibility of a new system to solve the problem
  • designing solutions—creating the new system
  • implementing—using the system to solve the problem
  • testing, evaluating and maintaining—the ongoing operation of the system.
