3. Network Transmission Modes

3 main modes for transmission of data over a network:
  • Simplex
  • Half Duplex
  • Full Duplex

Simplex

Simplex mode allows transmission in one direction only, from the sender to the
receiver. An example of simplex mode is the radio, a telegram or television.
  • Is the easiest data transmission mode available
  • It allows communication in only one direction
  • Like a one way street

Half Duplex

Half duplex mode allows transmission in both directions but not at the same time. This
means the sender and the receiver take turns. An example of half-duplex mode is
an intercom, walkie-talkie or disk drive.
  • Allows communication in two directions but only one way at a time
  • Like a single lane bridge

Full Duplex

Full-duplex mode allows transmission in both directions at the same time. Most communications systems, such as the telephone or email, use full-duplex mode.
  • Allows communication in two directions at the same time
  • Like a multi lane bridge
